I feel alone in the new city

Hi Eva. Eight months ago I moved to Athens for a job I really wanted.

The job is going well. But in the evenings I come back to an empty apartment and I have no one to ask me “how was your day?”.

I’m a bit ashamed to admit it, but I feel lonelier than ever. Is this normal?

Hi. Yes, it’s completely normal, and you have nothing to be ashamed of.

The loneliness of a new city is one of the quietest kinds. Everyone around you seems to already have their people, and you feel like you’re late. You’re not late. You’re just starting.

“Adult friendships aren’t born. They’re built through repetition.”

Pick a place and go there again and again: a running group, a class, the same neighborhood café at the same time. And keep your old friends alive with one phone call a week.

And if some evening the loneliness gets too heavy, 10306 is there for a chat.
With warmth, Eva
